You need a raft to travel along here, and even then the river is so fast flowing that you're not sure when you'll return to the bank. Certainly a quick way to get downstream.
Fortunately you can usually find a place where some generous soul has built a bridge, although you'll usually find it to be Pa-Trolled by some money grabbing monsters who demand a toll.
