Electronic Campfire Issue Fifteen

Editor: Greg McDougall

< 14 | Index | 16 >
Welcome to issue fifteen of the Electronic Campfire. Highlights this month
are the results of the Monster Island additions poll and some good messages.
I'll be reorganizing the archive site and putting the latest issue of EFire
at the top of the list too. I'm apologizing in advance in case the next
issue (or any for that matter) are disrupted. Real Life is once again
intruding and I'm in the process of looking for a house with my significant
other. Expect major upheaval when (and if) I ever find somewhere that
doesn't need completely rebuilding!

Finally, although I'm pretty sure you're all sick and tired of hearing it,
the MI Bulletin Board has once again been given a clean bill of health by
the Pipex Support bods. I have by now no doubt that some of you will be
unable to post. Just give it a quick try with only your name and email
address (plus message!) when you get chance.

Oh well, on with the issue...

Greg,

Great newsletter as usual. Two things: would it be possible for you to
snail-mail me the KJC MI newsletter? I'm assuming it's not digitized. If it's
emailable, by all means please email me a copy. If it needs to be
snail-mailed, please let me know what the cost will be and I'll reimburse you
fully for all your expenses.

The second thing, is that in the U.S. side, we're putting together a list of
programming changes or additions. The U.S. gamemaster has said KJC will be
giving strong consideration to whatever we put together. We'd like to get
ideas and other input from the European players, so would you be so kind to
pass on this message? Please ask them to send any ideas to Steve Abbott
(AbbottSM@aol.com).

Thanks! :)

HI All
Well Zoingot blurb obtained by traveling at least 2 stations down the line.
You`ll stop for a rest at a station and exit the carraige and meet the Zoingot
Driver. Thus getting the blurb ;) They`re a wired race that i do know...
But the travel will cost you. in oc`s and act points.

Well, I see your problem. But I hate web chat pages. I've tried it once,
and I think it sucks. Just my opinion, though. I'm too used to IRC, by now,
I suppose. Anyways, there are some IRC clients, like mIRC, for example that
supports IRC'ing through a firewall. So it should in theory be possible for
everyone to access IRC, with the right software. :)
You can get the newest verson of mIRC at http://www.mirc.co.uk/get.html
Can you do regular file downloads, btw? Just http, or ftp too, if so?
If you have any further problems connecting to an IRC network, please
contact me at <malie@sn.no>, and I'll try to solve it...

Umm... Not to complain, but an IRC channel cannot have spaces in the
name... I suppose I'll find it pretty fast anyways, though, at least with a

Hi,

This is to let everyone know that a new Monster Island Mapper is almost
finished. I've been working on it on and off for the past year.

Mapper Stats: (completed so far)
*Ability to add your own bitmaps for terrain, and features. Although, it
does come with its own bitmaps, you'll be ready when new terrains are
created.
*Selectable visibility of square information. Trails, creatures, sightings,
plants.
*Works with existing (Jim Weurch style) database. It does add a few more
tables, however. No need to re-populate your database.
*Windows 95.
*Tactical and Strategic view. Tactical view appears like a MI turn, with
square coordinates relative to a particular monster. Strategic view is the
entire Monster Island shown in a single window.

Working on the following:
*Plot/display monster moves/turns.
*Send plotted turn via email.
*Ability to jump around the Tactical view based on location of mouse click
in Strategic view.
*Find nearest creature/plant/sighting and display shortest path to it.
*Track enemy/friendly monster sightings.
*Anything else you can think of.

Cheers,

I've created a turncard editor which will allow you to enter and edit your
turncards and automatically calculates the action points spent on orders.
The resulting turncard can be pasted into your mail program and sent to KJC.
The editor is for Windows 95 and NT only. The program can be downloaded from
http://users.cybercity.dk/~ccc2934/monster/ in the MIC95 section.
Try it out and let me know what you think.

Subject: Re: MI poll question

Mark,

Here is the posting from AOL with the results...

Here are the Top Ten Improvements to Monster Island that people want, based
on the votes that I received. There were six responses, including my own,
so if you don't like the results and you didn't vote, keep your mouth shut.
I kept voting open until this morning before doing the final tally. If two
weeks aren't enough time to decide what you would like to see, don't come
crying to me.

Ranking: 1 to 10, with 1 being the top requested change. There were actually
more items requested than were on this top ten list, but listing everything
people voted for would be ridiculous. BTW, if people were wondering how I
did the ratings, every ranking was worth a certain number of points, which
were added up to get the value placed on the particular item. For example,
if an item got a 2, 5 and 8 vote their point total was 18. I had hoped that
this would eliminate ties, but it didn't. Oh well.

.10 - Add new dark places.
.9 - Allow monster versus monster wrestling.
.7 (tie) - Add Blurb List Order
.7 (tie) - Put more blurbs into the game.
.6 - Add Black Voodoo to the game.
.3 (3 way tie) - Activate unusable items or get rid of them (Iron Steins, Sunka Death Masks, Bows, King Ock Mushroom Groves, etc.)
.3 (3 way tie) - Make gold rings work only part of the time
.3 (3 way tie) - Make hidey holes work only part of the time
.2 - Add Weather
.1 - Add Demigods to the game

There were also votes for the various attack orders (Attack Group, Attack
on Sight, etc), Spell master, etc. I will forward the entire list of ideas
to Keith for him to review and send to KJC. After that we'll just have to
wait and see.

Steve

Subject: Monster Island Companion - new and old versions

A number of people have asked why the blurb editor wasn't included in the
package and why the convert program didn't work properly and so on. I think
the problems have arisen because people were downloading the programs from
http://www.diku.dk/students/zorglub/ instead of my new and improved site at
http://users.cybercity.dk/~ccc2934/monster/.
I don't think the diku-version of small.zip has been updated for years, but
the cybercity version has.

Well, that's it for another one. The mailing list keeps getting bigger and
with it the newsletter. You may have noticed that I've cut the editorial

Finally, I had the following bounces last issue. Anyone got a newer address?
